Maliki Deserved the Second Shoe

The less than a minute affair has become one of the most memorable moment of history, not because it presented a pleasant sight but due to the insult it heaped on Mr. George Bush, the arrogant and brutal invader and destroyer of Iraq. Mr. Bush was addressing a press conference in the heavily fortified green zone of Baghdad when a television journalist, Muntazar al-Zaidi threw his shoe on him. The shoe missed the target, as Mr. Bush ducked and dodged. Before any one could fathom what was happening, when al-Zaidi threw his second shoe at the American president which was off the mark again. Mr. Bush seemed a bit disturbed and the colour of his face changed and darkened for a moment. Then the Iraqi secret agents overpowered him and reportedly broke one of his legs and ribs.
Iraq’s American agents easily overpowered al-Zaidi but can they also erase the symbolic meaning of the occasion which the entire world has watched either on televisions or on countless websites. Can they suppress the reverberating words which al-Zaidi uttered while targeting Mr. Bush with his shoes? Al-Zaidi is reported to have said, while throwing the first shoe at Mr. Bush, that it was the farewell kiss or parting kick to the dog that invaded and destroyed Iraq. And when he targeted Mr. Bush with his second shoe, he said that this was from hundreds of thousands of those who have been orphaned and widowed by the war he had imposed on Iraq.
In Islamic and Eastern traditions guests are not welcome with shoes being thrown at them. But was Mr. Bush really a guest? Surely he was being welcome in Baghdad by those who had come to Iraq in 2003 on American tanks to occupy their own country. But for millions of Iraqis, who have lost kiths and kins as well as their freedom, he is the most hated enemy who carries the blood of innocent children and women on his sleeves. What is wrong if such cruel men, rather brutes, are welcome with shoes by the occupied and oppressed people?
Al-Zaidi, or his action, is symbolic in many ways. He, like millions of Iraqis, did not have the means, especially weapons, to fight against illegal American invasion and occupation of his country. He, therefore, chose to insult the main American culprit by throwing his shoes at him. Al-Zaidi is also a Shiite and by his action, lauded across the Arab world, he has punctured the American propaganda that only the Saddamists or a tiny group of Iraqi Sunnis, opposes the US presence in Iraq. Finally, al-Zaidi is an educated and well-paid Iraqi who, by his action, has shattered the American myth that only the unprivileged Iraqis dislike Mr. Bush.
The so called Islamist Dawah Party to which the American stooge, Nouri al-Maliki, the Iraqi Prime Minister, belongs, has been trying hard to impress upon the world that all was right in Iraq. The Americans, too, have been propagating the same thing. The Shiite religious class, led by Ayatullah Seestani, has been campaigning that the insurgency in Iraq was on the decline. The world media, probably now tired of reporting the routine or daily bloodbath and anti-Americanism, has also been silent about Iraq for a while. But now all these have changed all of a sudden owing to the laudable action of Al-Zaidi. He has told the world that Iraq is an occupied country which needs the world’s attention and support for its liberation and freedom from the cruel American occupation.
Since 9/11 the arrogant American president has behaved in a way as he has the sole right to unleash violence against individuals and countries whom he regards as enemy of the so called free world. He says or decides some thing and thinks that the world must accept it without questioning. There are countries which have problems with other countries but they, unlike America and Israel, do not attack them. Instead they approach the Security Council of the United Nations for punishing countries and individuals being held responsible for unleashing terror against the innocent people. By throwing shoes at Bush al-Zaidi has broken his arrogance. This symbolic method of protest must serve as a reminder to Mr. Obama, who is planning to do to Afghanistan what Bush has done to Iraq, that brutal invasions do not solve any problem and that lack or absence of opposition to occupation does not mean that people have accepted it. If not a military, at least al- Zaidi might stand to protest and heap insult on the mighty and the arrogant that Mr. Bush has been throughout his eight years in White House. His method of protest apart, Zaidi has shown how arrogance can be insulted and humbled. He did all the right things except that he should have thrown the second shoe at Maliki whose collaboration with Bush’s occupation of Iraq is equally sinister.

Of Dharma Yudh and Jihad


Sayyid Abdullah Tariq is a modern, educated Muslim from Rampur, U.P. He has devoted his life to studying the Quran and the Vedas and believes that the two Holy Scriptures were revealed to guide humanity. In October 2003, I invited him to deliver a lecture at the Hamdard University on "the commonalities between the Vedas and the Quran". During the lecture he, all of sudden, sought to know the communal composition of the audience. There were some 200 students and it was pleasing to note that about 60 per cent of them were Hindus. The speaker asked them if anyone had seen the Vedas; he was sure that none had read them. To our surprise no one gave an affirmative answer. Until a few years ago, Hamdard University used to organize lectures by eminent scholars to sensitize students about various cultures. Unfortunately, the lecture series has discontinued but its relevance cannot be undermined. In fact, in view of rising communal tensions, universities in the country need to organize such lectures to produce better-informed leaders. Ever since I heard Mr. Tariq's lecture in 2003, I have wondered if one's poor knowledge of his own religion is as dangerous for socio-communal harmony as our ignorance about other faiths. No one can deny that such ignorance has often been exploited by misguided elements to create cleavages in society. And, of late, elements of both —the Hindu and Muslim communities, as alleged by police and the media, have indulged in abominable acts of violence.
Both Hindu and Islamic scriptures have outlined their concepts of Dharma Yudh and Jihad. In essence, the two imply man's utmost effort, including war, to establish justice. They have not only explained their respective concepts of war but have also laid down principles which warring sides are required to observe.
Hindu scriptures have outlined the rules to be observed in the battlefield. The Manusmriti has forbidden to smite one's foes with sharp weapons concealed in wood or with arrows mischievously barbed. It has also forbidden the use of poisoned arrows, or darts blazing with fire. Similarly, it urges a horseman not to attack the enemy alighted on the ground, or those who surrender. A warrior in sleep or without arms will not be attacked; noncombatants are also to be spared. The Mahabharata has also outlined similar rules which warriors are required to observe. Among other things, it has forbidden to kill a weak or wounded man. The old, women of all ages, children and those fleeing from the battlefield should neither be attacked nor killed. By-standers and non-combatant citizens walking along roads should not be killed. Above all, gardens, temples and other places of public worship are not to be attacked or ransacked. Fighting at night or attacking the enemy under the cover of darkness is also not permitted. As in other religions, in Islam too, the most important teaching is man's right to live. And the power to establish justice that involves taking an individual's life is vested with the state. Killing a man unjustly is like killing all of mankind, declares the Holy Quran.
Islam has permitted war on those who oppress mankind, unleash violence and drive people out of their homes just because they follow a different religion. But while permitting war, Islam has also laid down some principles of warfare which are to be strictly followed. These principles, like those of Hinduism, are regarding the rights of combatants and non-combatants, the rights of ambassadors, captives and those conquered. The combatant belligerents are those who take up arms and physically participate in a war. Like Hinduism, Islam has also urged not to kill the aged, women, children, the sick, the wounded, the blind, the handicap and wayfarers. War has to be fought justly for a just cause and recourse to violence is permitted only in unavoidable circumstances. It would be appropriate to ask if people, Hindus and Muslims allegedly involved in acts of terrorism, have ever sought to understand the noble teachings of their respective faiths regarding the rights of innocents who often happen to be targets of their ferocious bombings and mob frenzy. Dharma Yudh and Jihad are noble concepts and the two are waged for attaining cherished ideals like establishing justice and ending oppression. They are also conducted chivalrously and within the moral limits prescribed by Holy Scriptures. Planting a bomb surreptitiously to kill an innocent is not Jihad; so, too, burning a handicap person to death is not Dharma Yudh. There is something seriously wrong with the understanding that terrorism is Jihad or Dharma Yudh. It is sad to note that the energy of so many young men is being misused to cause destruction. It is negative thinking which succeeds only in holding back development. Positive thinking, on the other hand, enables man to create a better and more prosperous tomorrow which is what India needs.

No time to complain, time to be wise

Abdus Subhan Qureshi alias Tauqeer Bilal’s mother Zubeida Qureshi was punishing when she said, “Hang my son in front of me if guilty.” Soon after the Jamia Nagar encounter, accused Muhammad Saif’s father Shadab contacted a television channel to say, “If he is involved in such acts, I would prefer not to see his face and if he ever comes before me, I would shoot him down.” Harsh words from loving parents. But Zubeida and Shadab are confronted by the ‘reality’ of their sons possibly being terrorists. They will never have the luxury of living in peace or with honour. We can only imagine the intensity of their wounded feelings. The parents’ eagerness to improve their image shows the mental agony of Indian Muslims who feel called upon to explain their position in the wake of terrorist attacks. It may be recalled that not too long ago, the Muslim community held rallies and seminars to condemn terrorism as un-Islamic. There is pressure on Muslims. Moving to the bigger picture, ‘Incredible India’ has a tendency to become ‘dangerous’ at the slightest provocation, despite its strong social fabric. The biggest disease among Hindus and Muslims is a shared ignorance about one another’s religions and cultures. There is no monolith India culturally, religiously or linguistically. Similarly, there is no monolith Muslim thinking. The community is as diverse as Indian society. In normal times, Indian Muslims do not behave as a pan-Indian community. But an issue like the Muslim personal law evokes a pan-Indian approach. At times Muslims feel under siege — post-Babri mosque demolition for instance or in the wake of terrorism. The Muslim response then is, naturally, monolithic and pan-Indian. The community is similar to any other social group. Muslims suffer, as do Hindus, from poverty and illiteracy. There is hardly anything that distinguishes the Muslim middle-class from its Hindu or Christian counterpart. What cause damage are the sweeping generalisations. If the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) is suspected in the recent blasts and is viewed as a terrorist organisation, nobody, Muslims included, should have any objection. The problem arises when SIMI’s alleged activities form the basis to assume that all Muslims support terrorism. Muslims are then seen as ‘the Other’. The Sangh Parivar’s venomous anti-Muslim ideology and campaign are well-documented. The BJP practises politics of hate and exclusion. The Parivar’s purpose is communal polarisation. That said, it will be wrong of Muslims to believe the Sangh Parivar represents all Hindus. There are many Hindus dead against its exclusionary politics. Most Muslims realise this. But, at times, Muslims do generalise. They view government or its institutions, the police for instance, as ‘the Other’. The police force’s track record during communal riots is not encouraging. Fake encounters have only contributed to the feeling that the police are biased against Muslims. The result is a huge trust deficit — the distrust was evident in Jamia Nagar. The media must highlight examples of Hindu-Muslim cooperation: madrassas with Hindu teachers and students a case in point. Many Hindu NGOs work for the better of Muslims. They overcome obstacles with the assistance and cooperation of Muslim scholars. A Hindu NGO in Haryana’s Mewat region asked me to address some Muslim notables. The NGO’s problem was that Muslim parents resisted the idea of wards being taught by non-Muslims. But their resistance evaporated when they were told that the Holy Companions had learnt from non-Muslims captured as prisoners during the Battle of Badr, Muhammad’s first armed clash with the Makkan infidels. Indian Muslims are educationally backward, economically deprived and politically marginalised. They tend to focus on the wrongs done to them and rarely introspect. We complain that our religion is equated with terrorism. The other view is to blame ourselves for the inability to use the media to advantage. Complaining will not work. We must develop capabilities to counter negative propaganda. To that end, Muslims are realising the importance of education. A section of the Muslim leadership is working hard towards this. There is a demand that government provide schools, instead of more police stations. It is time for Muslims to be wise and not reactionary. We need to understand the new, emerging India. This is not being visionary. The point is that even a madrassa education can be of help. One only has to look at successful madrassa graduates, especially those from Falah, Islah, Nadwa and Deoband, to see how they moved on to modern universities and secured jobs. The government is no longer the sole creator and provider of jobs. The private sector has thrown up opportunities like never before. Here the scope for discrimination and biases is minimal. When an India of opportunities seems to be round the corner, it is futile for educated Muslim youth to indulge in mindless violence and miss the bus of progress and development.

a c , pune, says: hello people the article was really great and yes every Indian should read it but coming back to the religious part people should understand that any religion is not forced upon them and as a human we cannot and will never be able to understand any holy book without a gods messenger in other words who is been blessed to explain the meaning till then the opinions of these holy books will differ from preachers point of view and never will be able to convey the true message. We should be talking about the brand - "Indian" rather than "Hindu/Muslim/Christian" or "North Indian/South Indian". Each one of us needs to understand that it is being an indian which will take us to places and give us the satisfaction at the end of the day, then just being a religious devotee. As the author points out, a slight provocation seems to be enough to ignite the whole situation. Having said that, we need to very strongly look at what is going wrong that we are facing terrorist attack every other day. First took out there vent and then added suger coating to minimise the damage done (as in this writing). The author as described is not a 'was' SIMI member but is an active member his writing depicts that. If the muslims are poor they are poor from the time of Independence and BJP came to lime light in the 1980's, why did the author single handedly pointed out this political party.Why did the author have no guts to ask this question to the ruling party those who have ruled India mostly? If today BJP is standing for the hindu cause they are not doing any thing wrong as some one have to speak for us too. Ajay, New Orleans, says: I may choose to correct Mr. Narendra Kale when he equates Dadabhai Navroji, Lokmanya Tilak and Veer Sawarkar with Mahatma Gandhi. The meaning Hindutva is correctly described however I agree to differ that Mahatma Gandhi visualized that 'Every citizen is treated equally,irrespective of any caste, religion.,language, domicile status etc. All this is covered under Hindutva i.e.Indianness.'. Thats not what we really see in the society currently. When application forms of any Government, educational etc organizations ask a person to fill their 'Caste and Race', it all wipes off the notion of equality. All the literal (wrong) meaning of Hindutva cropped up during the Congress rule which formed the first Indian government and is still being carried out (for political purposes) by the so called secular congressmen. But BJP is not partial to the minority sect and that is why it is percieved as 'anti-muslim'. BJP's ideology i.e hindutva should not be confused with the religion hinduism. Hindutva is a way of life and it does not demand allegiance to any particular god or religion. What India is witnessing now is reverse discrimination. N.Vishwanath, Thane, says: I agree with Mr Raj from Melbourne when he says that Muslims are in a perpetual state of self denial. However that seems to hold true for all communities in India. The sikhs lived in a state of self denial in the 80's. They would not accept that Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was just another terrorist and that the blowing up of Kanishka over Cork in Ireland was an act of terror commited by some perverted members of their community. All those innocent lives lost were justified in the name of "genuine greviences" of the community .. now what these greviences were hasnt been explained to this day with any degree of clarity by anyone. Now after seeing Hindus defending the Sangh parivar in such large numbers despite overwhelming evidence of their atrocities on Orissa, it looks like the same mindset is beginning to be exhibited by them as well... Unless we learn to look at reality with open eyes, instead of looking at tnem thru the prism of identity, the same phenomenon will be repeated again and again. Don't identify anybody with the person's Relegion, culture, caste or by the reservation catagories. But unfortunately, all the govt forms identify person only by these categories. After independence, the new indian govt had been following devide and rule policy among various religions, caste etc. This should stop and have policies common for everyone. They are ignorent of Muslims neighborhoods and their pathetic condition. They do not want visit their neighborhoods for safety and security and hence speak ignoretnly about them. Osama not the face of Indian Muslim

Every time bomb blasts rock an Indian city, police and media zoom in on 'culprits' who idolize Osama bin Laden, the name that is synonymous with Islamist terrorism. Bin Laden may enjoy cross-border popularity, indeed notoriety, but to project him as the ultimate hero of Indian Muslims is a gross mistake. Indian Muslims are as divided as any other socio-religious group. There are the Sunnis and Shias, Deobandis and Brelvis, Hanafi and Salafi, among others. This list does not include fundamentalist Islamists. Then there are several religious socio-cultural and political organizations, such as Jamat-e-Islami Hind, Tableeqhi Jamat, Jamiat-e Ulema-e-Hind and Jamiat-e-Ahle Hadith, which command a large following. Then there is Sufi Islam, which appeals equally to the secular and the religious, as well as the educated and illiterate. Those known as wahhabis, especially the ones with jehadist tendencies, are mere fringe elements. Osama's popularity can be attributed to his perceived stand against countries that oppress Muslims in Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan. It is certainly not his 'salafism' that appeals to Indian Muslims. His popularity simply does not cut through the existing sectarian divides. Salafism, derisively called wahhabism, is a historical movement, which demands that Muslims return to Islam as it was practiced in the early period when the deviations we see today were non-existent. Salafist ideology seeks to restore the 'Islam' practiced by the Prophet, his companions and their immediate followers. This is the 'Islam' that the great classical jurist Imam Ahmad Ibn Hambal sought to establish. In the 18th and 19th centuries, three noted figures sought to revive Salafism. They seem to exercise a great deal of influence across the world even today. Shah Waliullah was a great 18th century scholar. Born when Muslim rule was on the wane in India, Waliullah addressed every section —- the ruling elite, ulema, sufis and the masses - and demanded it mend its ways. He failed to arrest the political decline of Muslims but his views on religious issues continue to exercise a great deal of influence. It is a pity that sections of the ulema today study Walilullah's philosophy only to prove his Deobandi or Brelvi roots. This is wrong as these sects and sectarian beliefs originated long after his demise. The second noted figure who tried to revive Salafism was Sayyid Ahmad Shaheed, born towards the end of the 18th century. In association with Shah Ismail Shaheed, grandson of Shah Waliullah, he launched a religio-political movement. It appealed to Muslims to return to pristine Islam and wage jehad to establish an Islamist government in India. They first confronted the Sikh rulers of Punjab and then the British. They went down fighting and are remembered as martyrs. Both exercise a great deal of influence on religious scholars and the masses. The Brelvis, however, are critical of them; they derisively call them wahhabis. Sayyid Ahmad Shaheed and his associates were active in India when the wahhabis were battling to establish ideological supremacy in Arabia. Muhammad Ibn Abd al Wahhab is a greatly misunderstood personality. Born in the 18th century, he studied in Basra and Makkah. He believed that Muslims had deviated from true Islamic teaching and was particularly acerbic about the practice of visiting the tombs of saints to seek their intercession with god. He formed an alliance with the House of Saud, Saudi Arabia's ruling family, and sought to eliminate religious deviations. He was greatly influenced by Ibn Taimiya and followed the jurisprudence of Ibn Hambal. The Saudi ulema continue to be associated with the House of Saud. The alliance has helped both sides throughout. The wahhabis prefer to be called unitarians. Their writ runs in Saudi Arabia and they command a huge following in Qatar, Kuwait, Yemen and Bahrain and some other countries. They also have considerable influence in South Asia. The salafis or Ahle Hadith group in India, are in fact, unitarians. With Saudi help they are well-organised but do not command a huge following among Indians. Through a countrywide network of madrasas, Deobandis greatly influence Indian Muslims. The sect is close to the unitarians in matters of faith but differs on issues like tasawwuf or sufism. Then there are the Brelvis who differ from the Deobandis on a number of issues, though these differences are no longer so intense as in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Both Deobandis and Brelvis follow the Hanafi school of jurisprudence. Jamat-e-Islami is a revivalist religious organisation. Cadre-based, the closely knit formation wields considerable influence but has never been a mass movement. Both Deobandis and Brelvis are critical of some of Jamat's ideas. The Jamiat-e-Ulema Hind waged India's struggle for freedom alongside Congress. Firmly against Mohammed Ali Jinnah's two-nation theory, it has an all-India presence and is influential. Its religious beliefs are similar to those of the Tableeghi Jamat and Deobandis.
But the Unitarians or wahhabis hold little appeal for Indian Muslims. So, how does one explain the Osama bin Laden 'phenomenon', which millions of Indians hear of every day when police arrest suspected terrorists with apparent loyalty to the Saudi millionaire? Bin Laden's many business interests meant he was close to Saudi royals, especially Salman Ibn Abd al-Aziz, governor of Makkah during the Afghan jehad. The Saudis urged rich citizens to donate to fund the jehad. Not only did bin Laden donate generously, he also went to Afghanistan to participate in the jehad. Notably, the Saudis and the Americans were impressed by his generosity, boldness and bravery. Bin Laden was instrumental in forging the alliance between the Arab-Afghan mujahideen and the Saudi-CIA combine. In so doing, he compromised his principles, as did the Americans. After defeating the Russians, the Saudis asked their men to return, as did the US. But bin Laden had changed and wanted to establish an Islamic government. Against Saudi advice, he continued to finance the Afghan mujahideen. An angry Saudi government stripped him of citizenship and forced him to seek refuge abroad, first in Sudan and then, in Afghanistan. It is undeniable that sections of India's marginalised Muslim youth are impressed by bin Laden. They respect him for giving up a life of luxury for that of an Islamist warrior. They respect his fight against Americans everywhere. Many Indian Muslim youth seem to be influenced by Sayyid Ahmad Shaheed, but in a way that could only be the result of a selective study of his life story. The marginalised and the persecuted identify with the sacrifices of revolutionary figures. This can explain some Indian Muslims' fascination with Osama bin Laden. Take it from an insider though, that the great majority, however, remains unimpressed.

Ban forced SIMI to turn radical

When Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency in 1975, she banned the Jamat-e-Islami Hind and the RSS to maintain communal balance. Jamat leaders and activists were jailed across the country. Many Jamat activists were poor; many the sole breadwinner. The Jamat had a considerable presence in Aligarh Muslim University. It also had a small but active student wing, whose activities were confined to the university campus. On hearing of the plight of Jamat members, the student wing decided to help them secretly. It was this decision that could really be seen as the beginning of what would later be formalised as the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). I heard about SIMI when I was a student at Jameatul Falah, Belaria Ganj, Azamgarh, a prominent religious seminary. The madrassa was unique in the emphasis it placed on or commentary on the Holy Quran. Its students were encouraged to master classical Arabic, especially that of the pre-Islamic period. This pursuit was considered essential in order to fully grasp the literary excellence and intellectual depth of the Holy Quran. Familiarity with word roots was thought invaluable to explain concepts. A good example is the word 'Allah', the name of God in Islam. Most Muslims define Allah to mean the 'being' they worship. But Jameatul Falah insisted on its students knowing the word root, which is and means to move to someone with love and affection. Therefore, Allah can be both subject and object. He is the one who reaches out with unbounded compassion. He is the 'being' to whom men go with love and supplication. So too the word, which is derived from a root that means 'to take a thirsty man or animal to the source of water in a desert'. Islamic, therefore, is the law that guides mankind to the right path in the wilderness that is the world. This was how Falah helped us understand and apply Islam to life. It was at this point that SIMI's message reached us, the young at a Muslim religious school. It helped that SIMI's torchbearers were men who had helped the needy during the dark days of the Emergency. SIMI's message appealed to me and many others. I was at the Aligarh conference where SIMI was founded. There were about 250 delegates from across India. Among the foreign delegates was Anwar Ibrahim, then president of a Malaysian students' organisation known by its acronym, Abim. Today, Ibrahim, Malaysia's former deputy prime minster, is the main opposition leader. In SIMI's early phase, we were a group of enthusiastic, sincere, honest people, prepared to sacrifice all we had, and much that we did not. We were required to be model students and exemplary enough to draw others into our way of life. There was no coercion. Our way was to impress others by good moral character and academic excellence. Every SIMI member was required to maintain a self-appraisal diary. It was meant to help character-building. One of the diary's unique features was the encouragement it offered to spending in the way of Allah . But that was then. My formal association with SIMI ended when I left to study in England in 1985. Nevertheless, I continued to monitor its progress. It is safe to say it has changed. In the early days, SIMI had a near-perfect system of internal democracy, which ensured exhaustive discussion before decisions were made. This meant moderate views ultimately prevailed over the extreme. So too SIMI's early adherence to the ideas of Sayyid Abul Aala Maududi, a scholar-activist who fought for democracy. Maudidi did not believe in violent change. He had a 'hearts-and-minds' approach. Under Maudidi's influence, the Jamat ul-Islami remained a cadre-based organisation with limited mass appeal. But when Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini brought about the Islamic Revolution, SIMI began to ask if it needed to continue its peaceful evangelism or approach the masses directly. At the time, the consensus was it remain committed to Maududi's ideology and methodology and yet strive to approach the masses directly. Soon after, SIMI began a phase of public-protest with processions on issues of the day. This annoyed the Jamat leadership. It became a major issue in the early and mid-1980s. Jamat demanded that SIMI become its official students' wing. But SIMI resolved to remain independent, after long deliberations in Vijaywada in 1982. And yet, it wanted to remain closely associated with the Jamat. The Jamat was not keen and reacted by setting up its own youth wing, the Students Islamic Organisation (SIO). Despite the separation, the Jamat leadership remained in close touch with SIMI, providing it intellectual and religious training and leadership. But this arrangement broke down in the 1990s. Jamat leaders stopped attending SIMI events. Thus ended the sobering influence exercised by the Jamat on SIMI. It paved the way for SIMI's gradual radicalisation.
After the Babri Masjid demolition, SIMI was confronted with an ideological and methodological dilemma. It became more of a radical national party that tried to take an interest in issues relating to Muslims across India rather than the student segment in one fragment of the north. And yet, the important reality was that SIMI's radicalism still remained verbal. It spoke of but did not start or sustain an armed struggle. All through the 1990s, the SIMI leadership seemed divided between radicals and moderates. Take it from this insider that as late as 2001, when SIMI was banned, moderates were in the majority. But, even this small radicalism on SIMI's part made its retired leaders and members unhappy. In the mid-1990s, they decided they needed to exercise their influence to keep SIMI moderate. Their efforts went a long way towards strengthening the moderate element but failed to contain the tiny group of radicals. The extremism of this tiny group remained ideological. The Congress government, it would appear, ignored SIMI's radicalism as a fringe nuisance. While it is not clear if this was part of a well-thought-out plan or an ad-hoc, knee-jerk measure, it prevented SIMI's drift towards violence. When the BJP came to power in the late 1990s, it began to take note of SIMI's radicalism. Between 1999 and 2001, cases were filed against SIMI leaders for delivering inflammatory speeches and disturbing communal harmony. Some of these were patently false charges. The BJP government proscribed SIMI in September 2001 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and put its activists behind bars. Almost everyone arrested were out of jail soon enough. Some were out on bail, others acquitted. Many of the trials bordered on mockery. This must have swelled the ranks of SIMI radicals. In jail, many were brutally tortured. I have seen signs of torture on their bodies. It must be noted that before the ban, no SIMI activist was ever charged with violence or terrorism. It was only after the ban that cases began to be slapped against them. It should also be noted that moderates ceased their association with SIMI after it was banned. The radicals went underground. They are the ones now alleged to be engaged in terrorist activities. The ban on SIMI only served to accelerate its drift towards extremism. A banned and underground SIMI is dangerous. The possibility of it going the way of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida is real. Had SIMI been allowed to operate overground, extremists may have been contained or neutralised. But with general elections around the corner, our political class cannot be expected to rise above "ban politics". And yet, democratic freedom may be a better leveller than the politics of proscription.

Who Benefits from the Bomb Blasts

Indian Muslims are passing through an extremely difficult time right now. A situation has been created in which the whole community finds itself under trial. No one is above suspicion and even the most respected Muslim citizens can be picked up for police investigation. That educated Muslim youth are being arrested on flimsy grounds and tortured to accepting crimes which they have not committed. But what worries the most is the fact that the countrymen have willingly accepted that only Muslims indulge in violence and unleash reign of terror. This alone explains why the larger society is a mute witness to the atrocities being meted out to the Muslim youth in BJP-ruled states and elsewhere.
Serial blasts have taken place in all parts of the country and scores of innocent people including children and women, have been killed or injured, even paralyzed for life. Killing the innocent is a crime which can not be forgiven and the culprits must be brought to book. As responsible and civilized citizens we condemn this mindless terrorism in strongest words.
But we also take exception to what the police and the intelligence agencies are doing to the Muslim youth. Why the needle of suspicion must always point in the direction of the Muslim community. Our secret agencies have failed any number of time in detecting conspirators who carry out bomb blasts at will. But immediately after such tragic incidents they quickly become wiser, even super intelligent and arrest the ‘culprits’ in no time. It has become a boring, yet disturbing, routine. They quickly arrest some Muslim youth and declare him to be the mastermind behind this or that blast. Sometimes they are released but only after their image is tarnished.
This time the Muslim community has rightly raised questions about the police version of the mastermind behind this or that blast. A few weeks back the notorious Gujarat police arrested a certain Mr. Abu Bashar Qasmi whom it declared to be the mastermind behind the Ahmadabad blasts. In less than a month Delhi is jolted by murderous blasts despite the fact that the Delhi police was already looking for some Abu Zar and others whose names were disclosed by the Ahmadabad blasts’ mater mind. The sketches of the criminals who carried out blasts in Delhi are surely not of Abu Zar, the car-parking attendant whom the Delhi police, at the tip of Gujarat police, was looking for as prospective terrorist and bomber. This means either the Gujarat police was telling a lie or the mastermind Abu Bashar had lied and misguided them. The Delhi police can believe the notorious Gujarat police only at its own risk. The Delhi police also must keep in mind that a few days back all the Muslim youth arrested in Gujarat, alleged before a court of law that they were tortured to sign plain papers and confess crimes they had never committed. It is possible that the Gujarat police obtained by torture ‘tips’ from Abu Bashar Qasmi about the wrong people and provided them to their counterparts in Delhi. How can we forget the track record of the Gujarat police who have refused to work justly even after reprimand from the court. Time and again they have worked as loyal servants of Modi whose fascism is well-known.
The Muslim community is bewildered why only they are targeted as suspects and not the activists and leaders of the Bajrang Dal. Recently two Bajrang Dal leaders were killed while making bombs in Kanpur. Earlier skull caps and artificial beards were recovered from the houses and offices of Bajran Dal activists. We are at a loss why the needle of suspicion is never pointed in their direction? Why they can not be culprits? After all who or which party is going to benefit from the communal polarization which the murderous blasts are expected, even intended, to bring about?
The police, inept, and also biased against Muslims to a great extent, can not be expected to investigate impartially. Surprisingly the media are also not very helpful as none of them has bothered to independently investigate the involvement of the Bajrang Dal whose two leaders were recently killed in Kanpur while making bombs. Barring one or two leaders the political class also does not seem to be coming to our rescue. By all indications the Muslims alone have to fight out the battle ahead. The time is, therefore, difficult and the community is required to keep its cool, analyse the whole affair in an objective manner and chalk out the future course of action even more objectively and intelligently. It is possible that in trying circumstances some of our young men might have gone astray and adopted violence as a methodology. We must impress upon such elements that killing the innocent is not only un-Islamic but also counter productive. It must be borne in mind that a bomb here or a blast there can not annihilate the Indian state. On the contrary it would harm us the most. Our educated youth should also know that today’s India abounds in opportunities which are waiting to be grabbed by those who have decided to excel in education. And the market is increasingly becoming so competitive that it would be difficult for it to practise discrimination against talented Muslims.
Finally the Muslim community and leadership must see to it that contrary to the wishes of the Sangh Parivar the country must not be allowed to get polarized on communal lines. Many Muslims have rightly voiced that the purpose of the bomb blasts in various parts of the country is to arouse Hindu sentiments with a view to reaping rich electoral dividends. The general election is round the corner and the bomb blasts are thus well-timed. We must see the design behind the mysteriously carried out bomb blasts and frustrate it electorally. This is essential for our survival as a community as well as our future in the country.

Soft Hindutva Would Never Work

BJP cuts a sorry figure today. All its efforts, of mind and body (and soul it doesn’t have) to communalise the country’s atmosphere and disturb its social fabric for political gains are meeting with grand failure. Despite its best efforts, the communally charged agitation for giving back the forest land to Amarnath Shrine Board has remained, by and large, a local state phenomenon as the rest f the country has refused to be impressed by their nefarious agenda and propaganda. The cash in Parliament episode has also not worked in its favour, for its “holier than thou” image received a severe beating during and after the trust vote which the UPA government won with comfortable majority. And its latest drama through the good offices of the notorious Gujarat police to convince the common public that all terrorists are Muslim would also backfire. The media, by and large, have danced to their tune but sooner than later they would realize that the Gujarat police has falsely implicated the SIMI activists. The media may have forgotten, but the Suhrab episode is still fresh in public memory.
BJP is in haste to grab power at the centre. The problem is that India’s common public is not impressed by their credentials. Political commentators with insight know well that the road to Delhi passes through U.P. where the BJP is in bad shape. By all indications the fight in the next general elections in U.P. would be between the BSP and the SP-Congress alliance which is most likely to be formed in near future. It was BJP’s huge success in U.P. which had catapulted it to power in the 1990s. But for about the last one decade it has been declining gradually, in fact, it seems to have been marginalized in U.P. And the Muslim community, almost 18 per cent in U.P. must receive a pat on its back for marginalizing the BJP in the state. In the wake of the demolition of the Babri mosque a good number of Hindus were swayed by the BJP’s passionate temple propaganda on the one hand and the Muslims had deserted the Congress to stand solidly behind the SP on the other. They would vote only for the SP candidates, even in constituencies where they were not in winning positions. But gradually the Muslims realized the value of their votes and decided to vote for the SP, BSP or Congress candidate whom they found to be in a position to defeat the BJP. Being 18 per cent in U.P. afforded them to be the decisive factor in good numbers of constituencies. The Muslim cause was also helped by the reassertion of caste politics in U.P.
BJP knows that the 18 per cent UP Muslims are not only a big number but are also politically mature as they vote with a mission to defeat the communal outfit. They also know that the temple issue would no longer help them electorally. This is the reason that they want to communalize the U.P. atmosphere and polarize the Hindu majority in its favour. The propaganda against the SIMI and the arrest of its activists in mainly the BJP-ruled states are parts of their strategy to whip up the Hindu passions and impress upon the majority community that Islam and Muslims are a threat to the unity and integrity of the country. Unfortunately a section of the media is unwittingly helping the BJP in its design.
But the most worrying fact is that the Interior Ministry headed by a senior Congress leader is also unable to see through the BJP design. It has wrongly convinced itself that the lifting of ban from SIMI would give BJP an opportunity to criticize Congress as being soft on terrorism. Congress must learn a lesson from some of its partners in UPA whose open advocacy of SIMI has never harmed them electorally. The reason is that they ably expose BJP’s communal face and convince their electorate that SIMI was a victim of BJP’s communal electoral design. Why Congress is shy and hesitant in taking a fair stand on SIMI. It must analyse how many terrorist activities the SIMI cadres had carried out before being banned and what it has done after going underground. A banned SIMI is not only dangerous but is also liable to be used by BJP to its advantage. Moreover, it is now a common knowledge that only a tiny minority of the SIMI activists is militant in its thinking and approach which may be further undermined by lifting the ban as it would give an opportunity to the moderates to take full control of the organization and put it again on the right track.
BJP’s negative ideology is on the wane. It succeeds here and there not because people have begun to subscribe to its fascist ideology but because they find no other alternative to a failed BSP, SP or Congress regime in one or another state.
This is an obvious political reality which Congress, like the SP and RJD, must realize for its own advantage as also for safeguarding the national interest. Soft Hindutva has never helped any one other than BJP in the past and will do it no good in future as well.

Muslims and the Trust Vote on the Nuclear Deal

The D-Day came and went off, smoothly in the end. Surely there were ripples, even a storm-like situation but finally the Manmohan Sing emerged victorious. His government won the trust vote amid all kinds of dramas, allegations of bride, sale and purchase of Members of Parliament. Surely, as some MPs said, Tuesday (22.7.2008) was the saddest day in the history of India’s Parliament. But perhaps it was the most defining moment also.
The government’s convincing victory will not only accelerate the process for signing the nuclear deal with USA but would also enable it to push for economic reforms on the domestic front. And, of course, we shall witness a spate of populist measures as the next general election is not far away.
Politicians are given to speaking all kinds of things, relevant or irrelevant. The debate over the trust motion moved by the Manmohan Singh government was no exception. MPs from the opposition benches chose to speak on a variety of subjects detailing out the government’s failures on a number of crucial issues. But one can hardly miss the point that the trust vote was sought for justifying the government’s stand on the nuclear deal with USA. There was hardly anything new in the speeches delivered by either side of the divide in the House. The treasury benches sought to project the nuclear deal in the interest of the nation as it would put an end to India’s nuclear isolation in the world. On the contrary the opposition leaders, particularly of the Left and the Third Front, condemned the deal as being an instrument of surrender to the U.S. The two diametrically-opposed arguments have been known for quite some time through the print and electronic media.
Whenever there is a polarization even on an otherwise secular issue, the Muslim community finds itself in the crossfire. The Left has been opposing the nuclear deal tooth and nail and some of its leaders in their enthusiasm called it as being anti-Muslim. And the Muslim community felt obliged to clarify the matter. As could be expected, there were differing voices. But the overwhelming opinion has been that the Muslims were not a nation within the nation and therefore whatever was in national interest was also in their interest.
Politics is the art of the possible. It enables politicians as well as governments to be flexible. But the political flexibility is sometimes stretched so much that it begins to resemble what the opposition leaders have described as surrender. The UPA government surely committed such a mistake when it voted against Iran at the IAEA or delayed the process of negotiation on Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline. The government committed both the mistakes in its zeal to seal the nuclear deal with the US.
It must be emphasized that the Indian Muslims are tied up with the larger Muslim Ummah by faith. But the Ummah is not a supra-national concept, rather it is a social order that gives the global Muslim community the identity of universal brotherhood. It must be borne in mind that this social order is not above the political order of nation-states. This explains the reasons for differences in the foreign policies of the Muslim nation-states.
Yes, there could be issues on which the Muslim opinion may be different from that of the government of the day. The Indian Muslims rightly feel that India’s current military cooperation with Israel is not desirable. But the reason for holding this opinion is not a blind hostility to the Jewish State. The Muslims are rather opposed to the racist ideology of Zionism which seeks, and has always sought, to either eliminate or enslave the Palestinian Arabs. Likewise the Muslims are opposed to America’s continuous occupation of Iraq or its current hostile policy towards Iran. But it must be kept in mind that the Indian Muslims do not decide to vote for a party on the basis of its foreign policy only. Instead, their own problems at home, such as the absence of schools and civic amenities in their areas, lack of job opportunities and development which keep them perpetually backward, economically and intellectually, are the major factors which heavily impact their voting behaviour. It was refreshing to see the Young Muslim MPs emphasizing these very points during the debate on the trust vote.

The Prophet among his family members

MUHAMMAD the last Prophet and Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is the exemplary character that all Muslims must emulate. His way is the straight path that a Muslim has to follow in order to succeed in this world and in the hereafter.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) despite being the Messenger of Allah, was a human being, and therefore he did and said things which even ordinary people can easily understand and follow. The Prophet (peace be upon him) had exemplary patience, a capacity to bear hardship and ability to forgive the erring people, especially the ones who ever ‘wronged’ him in one way or the other.

He also had the ability to be steadfast and resolute in the face of persecution. He kept his promises, fought bravely when attacked, was generous in giving, content with what he had, honest, clean-hearted, kind and compassionate. He always worshiped Allah in sincerity, behaved with people in a humane manner, loved children and respected the womenfolk. In sum, in him was Uswa Hasana, the exemplary character: The Prophet (peace be upon him) was the finest human being.

Men are judged in many ways. But the best scale to judge the character of a man is to see how good he is to the members of his family, especially to his wife. Because husband and wife know each other in a way that others, even parents cannot. A wife knows even those aspects of man’s personality that he can hide from others. This is the reason that a wife’s testimony about her husband’s character is regarded as the most authentic.
When the Prophet (peace be upon him) received the first revelation in the Cave of Hira, he naturally became a bit apprehensive. In such a state of mind he went to no one but to his wife. And what Khadijah told him enumerating his good qualities is remarkable indeed. Imam Bukhari has narrated this story in the beginning of his magnum opus, Sahih, because it contains Khadijah’s testimony about the character and personality of the Prophet (peace be upon him). And this testimony has come from a woman who was witness to even those aspects of the Prophet’s life that others were not in a position to know.

It would, therefore, be rewarding to know as to how the Prophet (peace be upon him) behaved with his wives? It just so happens that people forget the real message or miss the spirit of the message and take their cultural habits as real things, even give them precedence and superiority over matters which are more essential. This is truer about our attitude towards women than anything else. Over the centuries, we have developed an attitude which deprives women even of the rights that the Holy Qur’an had given them. Women have all the rights to get educated and contribute to the welfare of the Ummah in befitting manners.
But we, the Muslims, have confined them within the four walls of their homes and do not do enough for their proper education. The Prophet (peace be upon him) had made it compulsory for both Muslim men and women to acquire knowledge. The Ummah must introspect and think what it has done so far for educating half of its population.

When we study the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him) we discover to our amazement that he was as much eager to teach women as he was about his male companions. Women were free to approach the Prophet (peace be upon him) and seek guidance from him. He never thought of them as a source of evil as some people think so today, and consequently deprive them of the opportunities that they deserve to have as a matter of right.
Some Muslims are harsh even toward their wives despite clear Islamic injunctions against such a treatment of women. Some think that being lenient to one’s children and wife is tantamount to spoiling them, and hence they never have fun or play with them. It would be advisable here to recount how the Prophet (peace be upon him) lived and behaved with his wives.

Hasan has narrated on the authority of his father, Ali Bin Abu Talib that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to visit or enter his house for fulfilling personal needs (food, sleep, etc.), for which he had permission from Allah. So, when the Prophet (peace be upon him) was at his home, he used to divide his time in three parts; one part was devoted to worshiping Allah, another part was (reserved) for fulfilling the rights of his family members (such as spending time with them, talking and sharing joys with them) and the third part was for the “well-being” of his self. Of the third part of time reserved for himself, a considerable portion used to be spent on those who came to him seeking guidance and instructions about various matters.

These were men of letters, people who knew more about religion than others. They had the standing instruction from the Prophet (peace be upon him) to preach to others what they used to hear from him (peace be upon him).

The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to go home at a pre-decided time. He would enter the house saying Salaam to the inmates. He would talk to his wives, enquire about their health and needs and eat whatever was brought before him. He used to share the joys and sorrows of his family members, he would also do such small chores as milking the goat, stitching or mending his shoes, cleaning the house, attending to the animals and helping the servants in their work, etc. He never liked to live in the house as the one whom everyone must serve and respect; rather he preferred to be one of them. He was specially very kind to his servants, never chided or dealt harshly with them, and forgave them when they erred. He had made it a point to be good to everybody or keep everyone happy in his home.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was specially very good to his wives. He had many wives and divided his time among them justly. He was a caring husband indeed and knew the rights of his wives and fulfilled them. He treated them equitably and never discriminated against anyone. When the time cam to meet Allah, he sought permission from his other wives to live in the room of Ayesha.

In sum, his married life was exemplary. He loved his wives, played with them, made fun with them and enjoyed their company. It has been reported that he used to put his head in the lap of Ayesha and sometimes even recited the Holy Qur’an in that condition. He is reported to have kissed Ayesha while he was fasting. He is also reported to have said: “The best among you is the one who behaves well with his family members...” It was his practice that after saying the Asr, or afternoon prayer, he used to meet all his wives.

He would sit with them, talk to them and enquire about their conditions and then in the night would go to the wife to whom he had to go as per the rotation rule. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was very particular in following the rotation rule, and would never break this rule on his own.

Once he became unhappy with Safiyyah who pleaded with Ayesha to do her a favour. And offered to forego her turn in Ayesha’s favor if she secured the Prophet’s pleasure for her. Ayesha agreed and met the Prophet in the night which was reserved for Safiyyah.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) reminded Ayesha of the mistake and asked her to go back. But Ayesha narrated the whole story and said that it is God’s favour which He gives to whom He likes. Thereafter the Prophet (peace be upon him) again became happy with Safiyyah.

THE Prophet’s (peace be upon him) was not a killjoy personality. At home he used to play with his wives. He allowed Ayesha to watch the games of men from behind the curtain. He let the daughters of Ansar enter his house and play with Ayesha; sometimes he also joined in those games. Once he ran a race with Ayesha in which he lost to her.

In a similar race later on he, however, defeated Ayesha and said that it was in reply to her previous victory. Often the respected wives would indulge in pastime conversation and narrate to him the events of the past, personal as well as historical.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) never discouraged such practices, rather sometimes he himself told them about his past life. Once Ayesha remarked that the Prophet (peace be upon him) lived, talked and laughed among his wives in a way as if he was not a great prophet, far removed from ordinary men and women. However, he used to become very serious when religious matters were discussed.

The respected wives had all the freedom to prepare and eat whatever they liked. The Prophet’s household was not rich and hence rich dishes were usually not available. However the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to take care of their needs and make provisions for good food and clothing.

He did not like the golden or silver jewelry but asked his wives to wear jewelry made of the ivory. This kind of jewelry was common among women in those days. He wanted his wives to be clean and well-dressed; he would never chide them, instead he would speak with them in a gentle voice, even if they were wrong. If he ever felt some displeasure, he would pay a bit less attention to the concerned wife in order to make her realize her fault. And when the respected wives mended their behavior, he would enter the house smiling suggesting that the phase of his displeasure was over.

This way the Prophet (peace be upon him) indeed intended to develop a healthy and all-round personality of the womenfolk. Today the situation is quite reverse of it. Our women hardly pay any attention to their health and there is hardly any provision for them to play within or outside their homes. The Muslim society needs to learn a lesson from the practices of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

The Prophet’s love for his wives is well-recorded. In fact, he was a loving and caring husband. He did not like and, therefore, did not provide too much worldly comforts to his family members. However, he tried to compensate that by giving them abundance of love.

Ayesha is reported to have said that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would lovingly put his lips on the portion of the cup from where she had taken water or would eat meat of the bone from which she had already eaten. Such small but loving gestures go a long way to create a healthy atmosphere at home which is highly congenial for mutual understanding and living together.

Ayesha has narrated a good number of events, which show that the Prophet (peace be upon him) lived happily at home. He joked with his wives and enjoyed their company. A happy home where understanding and cooperation prevail is essential for accomplishing major tasks, worldly or religious. It is, therefore, necessary for people to behave in such ways that can help them lead a happy family life.

A disturbed family is like a hell whereas a happy and peaceful family life is like living in the Paradise. Usually people say that it is the woman who makes or breaks the family life.

But from the Seerah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) we learn that man’s contribution is equally important in this regard. We also learn that a happy family life is based on love and care that the spouses have for each other.

In our present times some people do not behave with their wives properly. There is a misperception that men should appear tough towards their wives and children in order to maintain discipline at home. Such people believe that love spoils both wives and children. But this is a misconception as mentioned above. The truth is that there should be a balance between love and discipline. One should not only be a hard taskmaster, nor a doting and excessively indulgent husband.

But all Muslims must keep in mind that love for one’s wife is as necessary as obedience to one’s parents. The Prophet (peace be upon him), as elaborated above, was a caring and loving husband. It has been reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) breathed his last with his head in the lap of Ayesha. Is it not enough to suggest as to what kind of relationship between a husband and a wife is required in Islam?
